First of all, tar.gz files are compressed archive files (very close in similarity to other compressed archive files that you have no doubt heard of and used like zip files or RAR files). Just like you can use WinZip to open zipped files or WinRAR to open RAR files on your computer you can also use a free program called 7-Zip to open zipped files, RAR files, and most importantly for our purposes 7-Zip also opens tar.gz files.

In reality, if you ever have a loss of website data and you are using our website backup service to automatically backup your website then all you would really need to do is download the tar.gz file from your backup account and then send it to your hosting company to restore to your server for you.
